Sharing Strength: My Journey with MS with Boy Scouts Troop

Boy Scout Troop 192 in Wayne, NJ

Last night, I had the honor of speaking to my son’s Webelos troop at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Wayne, New Jersey. The evening was an incredible opportunity to share my journey with multiple sclerosis and discuss living with a disability.

As the boys settled in, I started by explaining what MS is and how it affects me. It was important to me that they understood not just the medical side but also the human side of living with a visible disability. They were curious and engaged, asking thoughtful questions. One particularly memorable moment was when a scout asked how I drive. I was able to share about my hand controls and how I’ve adapted.

We also talked about gratitude. I wanted the boys to understand that even in challenging times, there’s always something to be thankful for. It was heartwarming to hear their responses, from family and friends to the internet, which gave us all a laugh. The night ended with a group photo, and it was clear that both the Webelos and I had learned something valuable from each other.

Of all the times I’ve performed—whether training in a park or even singing in front of an audience—nothing compares to the feeling of standing before my son’s Webelos troop, sharing my journey with MS. Talking about my disability, showing them how I navigate life, and posing for a photo with my son—his thumb up in pride—was truly one of the highlights of my life. What made it even more meaningful was knowing that this experience helped fulfill a requirement for the Webelos to earn a badge.

It was an unforgettable experience, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share my story and inspire these young minds.
