Celebrating Cultures, Connection, and Confidence: Lafayette’s 2025 Multicultural Night

Last night was one for the books.

Lafayette Elementary School’s Multicultural Night brought families together to share, learn, and celebrate the beautiful diversity of our community. And let me tell you—it was incredible.

From the moment we walked in, we were surrounded by flags, food, music, and stories from around the world. Families proudly displayed their heritage, showcasing artifacts, traditional clothing, maps, and—of course—delicious foods.

This year, my son Sean chose to represent The Faroe Islands—and he owned it.

Sean has been obsessed with world geography for as long as I can remember. He can name every country, flag, and capital without missing a beat. And when we discovered through an ancestry test that his great-great-grandmother was Faroese, he took it upon himself to educate everyone about this small but fascinating Nordic country.

He dove into research, put together a detailed poster board, and shared some interesting facts—including the mind-blowing detail that there are more sheep than people in the Faroe Islands!

And because food is always part of the experience, we brought salted licorice (which, let’s just say, wasn’t the crowd favorite!) and peppermint chocolate candies, which had a few more fans.

Exploring Cultures from Around the World

Sean wasn’t the only one bringing a country to life—the whole school was transformed into a global village!

At the South Korea table, Sean’s longtime friend Elliott and his younger brother Hudson proudly shared their heritage with a display featuring traditional hanbok clothing, taekwondo, and Korean history.

The African table had an amazing display of handmade crafts, intricate beadwork, and cultural artifacts, showing the rich diversity of the continent.

One of my favorite parts of the night? The conversations.

At the Turkey table, I met some amazing women who shared their culture, beautiful handmade embroidery and textiles, and some of the best baklava I’ve ever had.

And here’s a favorite moment—laughing, learning, and connecting over shared traditions at the Turkey table.

Friendship, culture, and food—this is what it’s all about!

Then, I made my way to the Colombia table, where I felt right at home. I got to speak Spanish with the family and experience their warm hospitality. The highlight? Fresh Colombian coffee—I wasn’t leaving without trying some!

Colombian pride! Fresh coffee, vibrant culture, and a warm welcome!

A Special Note: Two Years Ago…

In 2023, he was just a little third grader, still finding his voice. Now? He’s owning the room. The transformation has been amazing to watch. If you want to see our own multicultural kids celebration, check it out here:

Final Thoughts

This night wasn’t just about flags and food—it was about representation, connection, and pride. Seeing kids light up as they shared their cultures was a reminder of how powerful it is to celebrate our differences.

Lafayette knocked it out of the park with this event, and I couldn’t be prouder of Sean for stepping up, learning, and sharing. Here’s to more nights like this—where the world comes together, right in our own backyard.
