Motorized Wheelchair Independence: Day Four Reflections
Day four into this journey, and it’s really shaping up to be a transformative experience. The constant clatter of crutches is now a memory, replaced by the quiet confidence of my new mobility. When I do hear the sound of crutches, it’s just me moving them intentionally, a sign of the positive changes underway.

This morning was eye-opening. While brushing my teeth, I realized the usual discomfort in my legs and feet was barely there. It’s becoming clear that a little rest, not complete avoidance, is key. Walking crutch-free to the kitchen, I noticed I’m standing taller, suggesting this new approach might even alleviate some shoulder issues I’ve been dealing with.
I’ve found joy in the kitchen, too. Today’s creation was a delightful South African sweet potato soup. Being able to easily access everything in my kitchen has reignited my passion for spontaneous cooking. And cleaning? It’s no longer the chore it once was. My vacuum cleaner, now always within reach, makes tidying up after cooking a breeze.
I’ve been getting to grips with the speed settings, akin to adjusting my scooter, and navigating turns is becoming second nature, reminiscent of learning to drive with hand controls. After four days, it’s all starting to click.
Soon, a friend will see this new chapter of my life. Their perspective matters, but not as much as my own needs and comfort. This journey is about making my space truly mine, a sanctuary for growth, learning, and independence. Here’s to embracing each day and the newfound confidence it brings.
