A Long-Awaited Victory: My MS Journey to the CAR-T Trial

Yesterday was a moment I’ve been waiting for—literally—for over a year.
After being on a waitlist for what felt like forever, I finally got the call: a spot had opened up in a CAR-T clinical trial for MS. But before I could be officially enrolled, I had to pass a physical test—walk 300 feet using only one crutch.
Now, if you know me, you know I usually use two crutches. Walking without one is not just uncomfortable—it’s risky. But I didn’t hesitate.
My mom and I rushed to the hospital. I knew this could be a turning point in my life.
The nurse gave clear instructions: no walker, no second crutch, just me, one crutch, and 300 feet of hallway.
So I took a deep breath. I steadied myself. And I started walking.
Around corners, past carts, people stepping aside as I focused on each step. I moved slowly, but I didn’t stop. And when I hit 328 feet, she turned to me and said, “You passed.”
I didn’t cry. I didn’t laugh.
I felt proud.
Because this wasn’t just a physical milestone—it was proof that I’m ready to move forward into something groundbreaking.
So what is CAR-T therapy?
Originally developed to treat cancer, CAR-T works by modifying a person’s own immune cells—T-cells—to recognize and destroy harmful targets. In cancer, they go after tumor cells. In MS, they’re programmed to eliminate the B-cells driving inflammation and damage.
This isn’t just about symptom relief. It’s about tackling the root of the disease.
And I get to be part of it.
Getting here wasn’t easy. But when that call came, I didn’t hesitate.
The trial begins in July. But that walk? That was the first step. And it reminded me that even when the road is long, we’re capable of so much more than we think.
So if you’re standing at the edge of something hard, something uncertain, just remember:
You don’t have to move fast.
You just have to move forward.
And when you do, you’ll realize—it’s not just about reaching the end.
It’s about proving to yourself that you can.
What’s your version of 300 feet?
And are you ready to take that first step?
