Chess Moves in the Kitchen: My Journey to Easy Planning

Navigating my kitchen like a chess piece

Hey there!

So, I’ve started something new recently, and guess what? It’s working wonders! It’s all about planning my day like a game of chess, but way more chill and in my own kitchen.

Yesterday, we decided on tacos for dinner right in the morning. Sounds simple, right? But this small step of planning ahead made my evening super smooth. It’s kind of like playing chess – thinking a few moves ahead, but without the serious, furrowed-brow vibe.

This whole chess-as-life thing clicked for me when I was teaching my son chess during Covid. We were both newbies, learning to move our pieces across the board, and it hit me – life’s kind of the same. Every step we take needs a bit of thought, especially since I have to be careful with my movements. Nobody wants to take a wrong step and tumble, right?

So now, I look at my day like I’m moving my bishop – all diagonal and strategic. Like, do I need something from that corner of the room? Or should I carry something there? Today, for instance, I was adding some photos to my vision board. Felt like a pro chess move!

And there’s more to it. I’ve got this appointment coming up with my doctor to chat about getting a motorized wheelchair. It’s a big step, and I wanted to do it right – face-to-face, not just over email. Gotta cover all the bases, like insurance stuff. It’s all part of the game plan.

The best part? This planning thing is giving me more ‘me’ time. The other day, instead of hitting the gym, I woke up to the sound of rain (love that sound!) and spent the morning working on my coloring book. Yep, you heard that right – coloring! It’s surprisingly relaxing and gives me a chance to reflect. Big shoutout to Kathryn, who got me into this. I even wrote her a thank-you review.

Looking at everything I’ve done, it’s like taking a bird’s eye view of a chessboard. How did I manage all this? What can I do better next time? It’s about making life a bit more breezy and thinking a couple of steps ahead, but in a fun, no-pressure way.

So, here’s to making life’s moves with a bit of strategy and a lot of ease. Just like chess, but in my cozy kitchen, and definitely with more tacos!
